Greentech for Women Hosts “EmpowerHER: High-Level Policy Dialogue” to Advance Media and Information Literacy for Women in Nepal


Kathmandu, Nepal – On August 12, 2025, Greentech for Women, “with the support of UNESCO Global Youth Grant Scheme” “Powering Up MIL against Discrimination” convened the “EmpowerHER: High-Level Policy Dialogue” at the Ball Room I in the Plaza Hotel, Lalitupr. The event brought together policymakers, civil society leaders, and experts to discuss strategies for empowering women through Media and Information Literacy (MIL) and combatting discrimination in the digital space.

The dialogue was honored by the presence of Hon. Yein B.D. Sahi, Minister of Forest and Environment,  and Hon. Mrs Indira Rana magar, House of Representatives Vice-Speaker , as the chief guest. The session was moderated by Miss. Arya Manandhar, President of Greentech for Women. Esteemed panel guests included Hon. Giriraj Mani Pokharel, former Minister of Health and Population, Dr. Maheshor Dhakal, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Forest and Environment, Dr. Bishnu Haru Nepal – former Ambassador from Nepal to Japan; Dr. Yagya Bahadur Karki – former member of National Planning Commission.

The dialogue focused on the critical role of MIL in helping women and girls navigate the complexities of the digital age, which includes combating misinformation, disinformation, and online gender-based violence. Participants emphasized the need for a holistic policy framework that not only promotes digital literacy but also ensures a safe and inclusive online environment for all women.

Key Discussion Points and Recommendations:
1. Bridging the Digital Divide: Participants highlighted the existing gender digital divide in Nepal and stressed the importance of policies that ensure equitable access to the internet and technology for women in both urban and rural areas.
2. Developing Critical Thinking Skills: The dialogue underscored that MIL is not just about accessing technology, but about empowering women with the critical thinking skills to evaluate information, identify harmful content, and become active and responsible digital citizens.
3. Addressing Online Harassment and Discrimination: A significant portion of the discussion was dedicated to the rise of online gender-based violence and discrimination. Experts called for stronger legal frameworks and robust reporting mechanisms to protect women from cyberbullying, harassment, and other forms of online abuse.
4. Integrating MIL into Education: Recommendations were made to integrate Media and Information Literacy as a core component of the national curriculum, from primary school to higher education, to equip the next generation with the necessary skills from an early age.
5. Promoting Women in Green Technology: Greentech for Women also highlighted its mission to promote women’s participation in the green technology sector, emphasizing how digital skills and MIL are crucial for women to innovate and lead in sustainable development initiatives.
