Consultative workshop to review the draft guidelines on Alternate Care Sites (ACS) held

Kathmandu, Bagmati province – The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) and WHO Country Office for Nepal organized a consultative workshop to review the draft guidelines on Alternate Care Sites (ACS). These pre-designated, well-prepared sites are intended to ensure continuity of lifesaving care when hospitals are overwhelmed or non-functional during disasters. Over 60 key stakeholders from the MoHP and provincial authorities in Koshi, Bagmati, and Madhesh provinces participated in the workshop, focusing on identifying open spaces and convenient public buildings that could be used as ACS. Drawing on past experiences where the lack of appropriate locations for temporary health facilities led to delays, the discussions underscored the importance of having pre-identified care sites. The initiative also served as a platform to strengthen collaboration with local governments, particularly in ACS planning, and marks a critical step toward ensuring timely and resilient health-care delivery. Once finalized, the guidelines will support hospitals in maintaining emergency care services, even when existing facilities are compromised. This initiative, supported by the European Commission, is part of Nepal’s broader hospital preparedness strategy and contributes to the realization of the constitutional right to emergency care.
