Training focused on the importance of developing and implementing climate resilient land use plan at the municipality level to address the adverse effect of climate change
Kathmandu, Nepal, 09 May 2024 –BRCRN project organized two events of Climate Resilient Land Use Planning trainings for municipality officials and Community Forestry User Group members in Saptari district. One training was organized in Rajbiraj from 28-29 April, 2024, and another training was organized in Rupani from 30 April - 1 May, 2024.
In Rajbiraj, 19 elected officials including 6 women participated in the training, which included 6 women. In Rupani, 21 officials including 8 women participated.
"Local communities and ecosystems are facing adverse effects of climate change. Land use plan at the local level should address the burning issues of climate change in different land use types. Climate resilient land use planning is therefore essential for promoting sustainability, protecting communities and ecosystems, and building resilience in the face of a changing climate," says Keshav Prasad Khanal, silviculture expert at BRCRN who facilitated the training.
The main focus of the training was the importance of developing and implementing climate resilient land use plan at the municipality level to address the adverse effect of climate change. Basic introduction on climate change adaptation and mitigation, land use policy and regulations and land use types were discussed. The participants also practiced developing basic considerations required while developing implementation plan for each land use categories.
Participants of the training responded that the training was valuable for them and increased their knowledge of CRLUP. "I learned about the kind of things we need to consider while developing plans for different land use types at the municipality level, to address the issues of climate change. I also learned the process of developing climate resilient land use plan at the local level. This training will be very helpful for annual planning at municipality level," says Anita Kumari Chaudhary, ward member of Shambhunath Municipality, ward no. 2 of Saptari district.
BRCRN has been conducting such trainings in order to strengthen institutions for climate resilience.
